YMCA Naval Campus
Manila, Philippines
The classical studio, in partnership with Peter Pennoyer Architects, taught by Richard John and Tim Kelly is a studio I would highly recommend to any student studying architecture. We spent the studio learning the fundamentals of classical architecture such as the column orders, the techniques of watercolor and the combination of the two. As a result, our final design project was a YMCA Naval Campus. Our team used the elements of the orthogonal master plan design to tackle the flow of the array of buildings. We found our site on the coast of Manila and used this site as a way to define several different spaces.
Buildings we defined as academic were arranged toward the street because they could be accessed by the general public. The athletic buildings were located in the center so they could be accessed by the Navy and occasional visitors. The other buildings such as dormitories and cafeteria were placed toward the water for quick access by the naval forces. With the use of courtyards, the buildings framed multiple spaces for gathering.
My contribution to the plan was the design of the library and the collaborative spaces. I used the Ionic order to display a sense of femininity and hierarchy to the library. The circular windows and cupola add to the nautical theme. The Tuscan pilaster added to the design of the collaborative space by giving it a more reserved, sturdy feel.
To conclude our design, a 3D model with the software Lumion was created. Take a look at the 3D model video below.
