The piazza in front of the church San Salvatore in Lauro is currently a parking lot. Our goal was to create a space in place of the current parking lot using the elements of ancient Rome such as palazzos, fountains, statues, and loggias. The goal was to bring back the notion of being able to walk around and gather freely just as the citizens of Rome did during the ancient times. My colleague and I designed a piazza framed with a palazzo, palazzetto, and loggia.
The piazza itself contains two opposing fountains each matching the adjacent palazzos. This establishes two mini piazzas within the larger one. The opposing façades of the palazzo and palazzetto portray a different feeling depending on the viewpoint. We used the teachings of Letarouilly, the Loggia Rucellai in Florence, and the fenestrations of Rome as inspiration to the designs.
